At Sodii, we know that not everyone enjoys the neutral and salty taste of our Unflavoured product. This is why we have our flavoured hydration blends, which are just as effective and for some easier to drink. Each flavour has been perfected through many versions as we try to find the ideal balance between salty, sweet, and refreshing, while meeting our standards for simple, clean, and real ingredients.
Our natural flavours are made using natural flavouring substances inspired by real fruit. For example, our Salty Citrus flavour contains lemon essential oil, while our Salty Grapefruit contains real grapefruit juice concentrate. It's worth noting that the natural flavouring complex makes up only a small portion of Sodii's overall formula. On average around 10% of total ingredients. The remaining 90% is made up of our core functional ingredients.
However, it's not as simple as adding a flavouring directly into our electrolyte blend. The flavouring needs to be combined with a small amount of carrier and processing ingredients to hold and deliver the flavour effectively. The primary carrier used is maltodextrin, which is widely used in supplements and health foods for its neutral taste, mixability, and product stability. Depending on the flavour, the carrier system may also include small amounts of other food ingredients such as emulsifiers and natural antioxidants. Which help the flavouring blend evenly into the product. Depending on the flavour, this is either acacia gum, a natural sap harvested from Acacia trees that is essentially a plant-derived fibre and one of the oldest and most widely used natural food additives, or sunflower lecithin, a natural fat extracted from sunflower seeds that is completely plant-based.
The maltodextrin found in our natural flavouring is a starch derived from corn, made through a process called hydrolysis, which breaks down the corn starch into a fine, easily dissolvable powder however there is no corn found in the final product. Maltodextrin is technically a complex carbohydrate but is quickly digested, meaning when taken in larger quantities it can cause a rise in blood glucose, just like any carbohydrate. However, for most people this is very much dose dependent and the trace amount found in our products is not enough to trigger a rise in blood glucose levels. We have had members of our team and external users wear continuous blood glucose monitors to test the response from drinking Sodii, who all saw similar results.
The total amount of carrier carbohydrates in Sodii is minimal, ranging from approximately 0.38g to 0.4g per serve depending on the flavour. To put that into perspective, a single almond or olive contains around 0.3g of carbohydrates. These amounts are small enough that they are unlikely to trigger a meaningful change in blood sugar levels for most people.
Remember, the natural flavouring complex, including the carrier ingredients like maltodextrin and emulsifiers represents on average only around 10% of the total product. The vast majority of what you're consuming is our core electrolyte and mineral blend.
We understand everyone is different and sensitivity levels to carbohydrates can vary, so if you have concerns or simply prefer minimal ingredients, we recommend trying our Unflavoured version, which contains no flavouring or carrier ingredients.
As always we recommend It's always best to speak to your healthcare provider for personalised advice and recommendations on supplements.
We're committed to continually refining and improving our formulas and products for the best in hydration, nutrition, and taste. If an alternative carrier ingredient becomes available that meets our standards, we will be sure to test it out.
